I live in a 1989 school bus. I bought the bus for $1700 from a online government auction. Living in a bus is an experiment in developing a sense of self sufficiency, simplicity, compactness and economy that is all my own. I have been slowly converting the bus into an RV and sustainable living lab. I have been living in the bus since May 2010 in New Hampshire and Vermont while studying natural building and working on an organic farm. Now I am parked in Mt Rainier, MD. This is my home.

The Name:
As the guy who lived up in the orchard all summer, they started calling me Adam Appleseed, It was a fitting name for the bus. One of my hopes in living in this bus is to plant some seeds of change to scale down to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Life Off the Grid
This is my living laboratory, an experiment in small and simple lifestyle, one where I can have a better appreciation for the things I consume and a better understanding of my ecological footprint. You can learn more about the tiny house movement here.

Veggie oil fuel
The Appleseed runs on recycled vegetable oil fuel. Vegetable oils used for cooking are chemically very similar hydrocarbon structure as diesel fuel and therefore can burn in a diesel engine with some modifications. Waste vegetable oil is a readily available and waste product from our fast food economy. $0/gallon is pretty good for a huge diesel school bus!

Solar power
Living in a bus is the ultimate in off-the-grid living. I was lucky enough to run into some solar equipment on the cheap. My 1/2Kw system powers lights, charging devices, etc… The mini-fridge is now an icebox.

The Wood Stove
This tiny wood stove keeps me warm in the cold months up north. In the Northeast wood is a plentiful renewable resource, in DC its been an ongoing challenge to find good quality free wood from my neighborhood.

This is so awesome. I can;t believe I didn’t know about this aspect of your life. Probably one of those things that – if brought up – would be all people want to talk about. Because it is so frickin’ awesome and now I can’t wait to talk to you about it. You are truly planting the seeds of change.
